A FOOTBALL enthusiast with a lifetime of the game in his blood has been awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) in the New Year Honours list.

Cllr Gwyn John, who developed his passion for the sport from the age of eight, has been recognised for his voluntary services to grassroots football in Llantwit Major.

The 68-year-old began his foot balling work in 1954 – organising street football teams in Llantwit.

He said he was stunned to receive the letter which wife Gloria, 70, opened.

“I thought it was another letter from the tax people and I said ‘You had better open it.’

“It really hit me and I shed a tear. My late mother said ‘One day you will be recognised for this.

“It’s not just about me – it’s for all the children and fathers who have come through the clubs.

“I’ve had so many laughs – players skipping wedding receptions and wives chasing in getaway cars. And wives pelting us with buns!”

Gwyn, a member of the former Barry League Council, and who holds countless football committee positions said he was also proud of the efforts that had been made in relation to Barry Town United and looked forward to seeing future developments for the club.

Vale Council leader, Cllr Neil Moore, said he was absolutely delighted his very good friend and colleague has been honoured.

He said: “Gwyn has been a stalwart figure in sport for many years, particularly football, not only in the Llantwit Major area but throughout the Vale. His commitment is unquestionable.”
