POLICE officers and community support officers from South Wales Police have successfully completed a ten-week British Sign Language course.

The course, held at the Vale Deaf Partnerships and Communities Together (PACT) meetings and taught by trainer Fosia Ibrahim and interpreter Patricia Rafique, provides participants with the basics of British Sign Language (BSL).

Sergeant Julie Smart said: "I would like to thank Fosia and Patricia for giving their time to teach this very valuable sign language course, which will help South Wales Police officers to work more effectively with the deaf community."

Members of the community who attend the Deaf PACT meetings were encouraged to learn that South Wales Police staff were learning BSL and would encourage more officers to do so in the future.

The next Vale Deaf PACT meeting is taking place on the Thursday, March 13, at 6.30pm at Barry Fire Station, Port Road West, Barry.
