GROUND preparation works on a Barry Regeneration Area scheme have begun at Barry Island.

The scheme, transforming the Eastern promenade adjacent to Nell’s Point, is now under way with the works allowing for the development of retaining walls, footpath links and beach huts.

The scheme builds on work already undertaken to provide a new car park and events space at Nell's Point.

New footpath links are planned to link the events area and car park to the Eastern promenade.

Vale Council cabinet member for regeneration, innovation, planning and transportation Cllr Lis Burnett and the director of development services, Rob Thomas, met with Jon Williams, business development director of WRW construction, to view the works undertaken.

Cllr Burnett said this regeneration scheme demonstrated the Vale Council’s commitment to Barry Island and the town.

She said: “It is wonderful to see the scheme taking shape and we look forward to the works progressing during the next few months.

"This is excellent news for residents, businesses and visitors alike and will without doubt ensure a sustainable and exciting future for the Island.”

Jon Williams, of WRW, said they were delighted to be involved in such an exciting project and were very pleased to be associated with the Island’s regeneration.

He said: “It is a challenging programme but we are confident that we can deliver a high quality outcome that residents and visitors will be pleased with.”
