A SCHOOL learning assistant has been named as 2013's community college Learner of the Year in the Vale.

Cadoxton school's Victoria Page took home the YMCA Community College Learner of the Year award, which was established in memory of the college's former head Margaret Jones.

Victoria was nominated for her commitment to teaching and learning as part of the Vale of Glamorgan’s Putting Families First scheme and was presented with her trophy at a presentation evening in Cardiff.

The award was given to Victoria in recognition of her many achievements, her courage to take on board new learning experiences and her commitment to pass on her knowledge to help others by running a Putting Families First parenting group.

Alongside Victoria, Cadoxton school parent Sarah Price was also shortlisted for the Learner of the Year award following her increased confidence and thirst for learning whilst attending the same parent group.

The Head of the YMCA Wales Community College Mark Isherwood said: "It is the achievement of learners like Victoria that continue to inspire us all and give us the drive and determination to continue to work together to widen access and participation in learning.

"This helps people secure work, stay and flourish in their jobs, keep healthy and play a positive role in their community."
