MOTORISTS have been reminded to be vigilant following a recent string of thefts targetting Mercedes vans.

The thieves have been stealing catalytic converters from Mercedes vans across the borough recently, say South Wales Police.

PCSO Surinder Taak said: “In the past these types of incidents have occurred in spates, so we are encouraging motorists with vehicles fitted with catalytic converters to be vigilant.

“There are some helpful tips motorists can follow to help ensure the safety of their vehicle. Whenever possible, park in a well-secured garage and if no garage is available, in a well-lit, public area.

“Vehicles can also be parked in such a way as to make access to the catalytic converter difficult, including parallel with another vehicle, if you own one.

“If possible, use alarms, lighting and CCTV to deter thieves. Always remove items of value from your vehicle whilst unattended and keep it secure at all times.

“You can also mark your catalytic converter by etching the part and spraying with heat-resistant paint.”
