THE FIRE fighting operation at the Vale Business Park, Llandow, is still continuing with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) crews working at the site throughout the day (December 6).

In order to extinguish the fire, it has been necessary to demolish the building to access and douse the burning waste.

SWFRS say the operation is ‘challenging and complex’ and has been prolonged by the nature and volume of the burning material within the building, the strength of the building structure, challenging site conditions and the need to protect the environment.

Steady progress is being made and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Natural Resources Wales and the recycling company which owns the site, Site Serv, are working closely together to ensure that the fire is extinguished as rapidly as the constraints allow.

The organisations involved have expressed their thanks to the local community and businesses for their continuing patience and support.

Health authorities say the risk to public health associated with the fire is low. Data collected in the first couple of days when the fire was at its fiercest indicated that people living locally were not subjected to prolonged periods of poor air quality as the plume was quickly dispersing and this remains the case.

In recent days the smoke plume and associated odour has been close to the ground and dispersing with the winds. The varying winds will have helped to reduce exposure for prolonged periods.

However, smoke is an irritant. Exposure to it can lead to temporary sore eyes, sore throat, runny nose and breathing difficulties. Those who have pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma may be more susceptible and should use their medication (such as reliever medication) as and when needed.

It is recommended that those who live or work in areas affected by the smoke plume take action to minimise exposure to smoke by staying indoors where possible and keeping doors and windows closed.

Short-lived exposure to the smoke from the fire is unlikely to have a long-term effect on people’s health, especially if advice to remain indoors and out of the smoke has been followed.
