BARRY scouts have sifted through 110,000 greeting cards ready for delivery and launched a shout-out for a Mrs Davies whose name and address wasn’t supplied.

1st Barry Sea Scouts and former scouts have notched up 12 hour shifts, sorting out the Christmas cards in its Scout Post scheme, but have said – while Mrs Davies could still get lucky – it would be impossible to deliver Down Under.

Group secretary Cathie Steele said: “During this week we open Smugglers from 10am to 10pm to get the cards sorted.

“The day crew are made up of ex-members like Noel Bishop who was a cub with 1st Barry in 1933, parents of children who are now adults and grandparents, as well as parents of existing members.

“Each year the same faces appear on Monday morning to help - Jen Morgan, Joan Coslett, Joyce Fraser, John and Gwyneth Ebert and many others. We are really grateful for all the help we get with the sorting - it's a mammoth task.”

“We've already had some cards which unfortunately aren't deliverable by Scout Post even though they have a Scout stamp. We've had cards for Australia, Canada, Qatar and some places more closer to home but not in Scout Post such as Bridgend and Magor.

“We are looking for new campsites and I know the Scouts would love to go to Australia camping but it's a little far!

“We've also had some without addresses for example Mrs Davies. These cards which are out of scheme or are just names are taken to the Scout Central Sort in Pontprennau where they are kept until after Christmas in case they're claimed.

“The cards that have Royal Mail stamps are taken to a post box.”

She added: “We really appreciate the support we get throughout Scout Post from those selling stamps including the shops that sell stamps for us, to those that sort the cards and the families that deliver on Sunday. This fundraising gives the beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers many opportunities which we would be otherwise unable to offer them at the level we do.”

Scouts are aiming to deliver the majority of cards on Sunday, December 8, finishing all deliveries before Christmas.
