PLANS for a proposed new affordable housing development in St Athan will go on display at a public consultation event on Monday (December 9).

Newydd Housing Association will be displaying the plans for the proposed scheme located at the Old Station Yard car park, St Athan.

The drop-in event at St Athan Old Community Centre, Church Lane, will be open between 2pm and 8pm. Local residents will be able to view pictures and plans of the proposed development on the disused brownfield site and have the opportunity to share their views.

Proposals designed by Tony King Architects, Penarth, include building 23 new homes for affordable rent on the disused car park using traditional construction methods. The development will offer five three-bedroom houses, ten two-bedroom houses, six one-bedroom flats as well as two wheelchair accessible bungalows, to combat the lack of accessible homes in the area. This will be a highly sustainable scheme that is fully compliant with Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3.

The development will be constructed by Newydd in partnership with the Vale of Glamorgan Council, should the proposal be approved by the Vale of Glamorgan Planning Committee in February 2014. The intention is for this development to be an affordable scheme funded by both Social Housing Grant allocated to the council by the Welsh Government and private finance secured by Newydd.

Paul Roberts, chief executive of Newydd Housing Association said: “I would like to encourage local residents to drop in and see us at the event so that we can modify plans according to their views.

"If anyone is unable to attend the event but would like to share their views they are welcome to contact our planning consultants by calling Jon Hurley from GJPlanning on 02920 660244 or email jon@gjplanning.co.uk by January 3, 2014.”

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Cabinet Member for Housing, Building Maintenance and Community Safety at the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: "I welcome this proposed development which would help address the need for affordable and accessible housing in the area. Please come along to the drop-in event and see first hand the plans - it will also give you an opportunity to put forward your views about the development."
