SCAM calls target computer users

SCAM callers have been targetting people in Barry, seeking to gain remote access to home computers, gain personal information and steal money.
Fraudsters claiming to be from Microsoft called the home of Alexandra Flinn in Barry, who had been alerted to the scam by her daughter who received the same call at her home a few weeks earlier.
Mrs Flinn, 65, said that the caller asked for her by name and told her they had identified a problem with her computer's security system that he needed to fix.
Remembering her daughter's warning she told the caller that her computer was being fixed elsewhere and hung up the phone. She traced the call back to an 02079 number, the code for inner London.
Mrs Flinn said that she wanted to spread word of the attempted fraud because, had she not been aware of the online scam, she may have fell for it as tens of thousands of people do each year.
"He used my name, can I speak to Mrs Flinn?" she said, "So you would automatically think it was from Microsoft.
"I might have fell for it, I don't know how gullible I might have been"
The Action Fraud Report Line, the UK's national fraud and internet crime organisation, advised people to never give personal information over the phone to anyone claiming to be from Microsoft.
A spokeswoman said: "Fraudsters often use the names of well known companies to commit their crime, as it makes their communication with you seem more legitimate. This is why it’s important to think twice before giving out any personal information.
"Common scams that use the brand names include receiving a phone call from ‘Microsoft Tech Support’ to fix your computer. Fraudsters make these phone calls to try to steal from you and damage your computer."
The spokeswoman said that firms such as Microsoft do not make unsolicited phone calls and anyone who receives this sort of call should just hang up.
