AN UNLUCKY break in some ways proved the lucky break for a Barry mum who went on to lose almost five stone, with support.
Mum-of-three 5ft 1” Emma Coombs slimmed from a size 22 to 12 in seven months, going from 14’02 stone to 9’06 stone, after badly breaking her ankle four years ago in a work place fall meaning she required pins and plates to fix the limb.
Emma’s, weight continued to gain as she had her children, now 10, nine and two years of age.
She was also diagnosed with asthma in 1999.
But after her third child and suffering from break-related pain, the 33- year-old decided she needed to do something about her weight and joined Slimming World – inspired by a friend who had lost five stone.
Emma, of Bassett Street, said: “I had been overweight for 12 years gaining weight with each of my children and thinking to myself I will diet next week.
“I usually did for two days and then got bored and went back to my old habits and my weight just went up and up.
“Four years ago I broke my ankle really badly in work having pins and plates fitted.
“I was out of action for nine months with different casts.
“I was told my doctors I would not be able to exercise as my ankle fixed.
“Three years after my operation and being in pain every day, not walking properly, and after having my third child I thought I need to do something about my weight thinking it can’t be doing me much good being so overweight.”
Emma found about an evening Slimming World group then operating at the end of her street and although shy and lacking in confidence was spurred on by the fact she was losing weight every week, other than Christmas,
She reached her target – 33wks later.
She said: “My consultant Lorraine has been fabulous and so helpful, always there when I need her, and also my new friends in the group.
“I have felt great ever since. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.
“I would never go back to my old habits. My ankle feels better, I can do even more with my children which is great and my confidence has grown loads and I’ve got so much more energy and I walk more every day which I couldn’t do before.
“The comments I get from friends and family are lovely commenting how great I look and how healthy I look.
“I joined a year ago. It has been the best year ever.”
Slimming World consultant, Lorraine Francis said Emma had done brilliantly.
She said: “Emma is a stunning member and she’s so supportive of other people. We’ve a closed Facebook site always on there giving support.
“I’m amazed at her activity level. When she first joined she was like a little mouse and would get all flustered.
“When we recently did a walk to raise money for the British Heart Foundation she walked three whole circuits of Cosmeston Lake.
“I’m really proud.”
Lorraine’s Slimming World class takes place at the New Jerusalem Church, Tynewydd Road, Barry, at 5.30pm and 7.30pm every Monday.
