PUPILS from Ysgol Sant Curig in Barry and Sully school were smiling after brushing up on their dental hygiene knowledge and winning a national drawing competition.
Ysgol Sant Curig pupil Samuel Belby, five, and Sully schoolgirl Isobel Brenan, six, got their teeth into the challenge of painting a picture for the Designed to Smile competition, their winning entries both being featured on the cover of the British Dental Health Journal.
Samuel and Isobel both won the chance to see their drawings published, being picked out of more than 2,000 entries from schools across Wales.
Designed to Smile is part of the Welsh Government’s national oral health improvement programme. It is being run in 1,200 schools across Wales with over 78,000 children are taking part.
Health minister Mark Drakeford said: “Congratulations to all the winners across Wales. This competition has helped to raise awareness about people’s responsibility to take care of their oral health."
Dinah Channing, oral health manager with the Designed to Smile programme, said: “It’s so important to develop good dental healthcare habits from a young age as they serve you well for life.
"This competition has been a great chance to remind children about keeping their teeth healthy.”
