A BARRY woman has won a prestigious marketing award after setting up her own careers advice consultancy.
Aimee Bateman, 32, was awarded the title of New Marketer at The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)’s Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards, the only marketing awards specific to Wales, at Cardiff’s City Hall on Wednesday, October 2.
Aimee, who has held senior positions with some of the UK’s largest recruitment companies, was awarded the title of New Marketer for successfully establishing her own careers advice consultancy, CareerCake.com.
Identifying a gap in the market, Aimee began to create and record her own careers advice through the use of video, using a second hand pocket camera from eBay and subscription-free platforms, as a cost effective way to communicate with a large and targeted audience.
Since her website’s launch in 2010, Aimee has helped thousands of people get their dream job while sourcing talent for global corporations and smaller entrepreneurial businesses.
Aimee also offers careers workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions to organisations and individuals, and will soon launch her own employability advice book; The Guide to Getting Hired.
Aimee, originally from Barry, said: “I have always been passionate about helping job seekers, yet as a recruitment consultant my role was not to help people find jobs, but to help companies find employees. With the increasing frustration I felt when I saw great people struggling to find their voice, I realised I was working for the wrong team. The result was CareerCake.com.
“There are a huge number of careers websites and – in my opinion – most of them give advice, but fail to make people feel anything. I wanted people to not only see what I do, but why I do it. I needed them to be able to look me in the eye and see my passion. That is why I chose video as my communication tool.”
Aimee’s expertise in employability skills and experience on camera has led to her securing a number of TV appearances and promotional opportunities, including featuring on BBC1 X-Ray’s Meet the Jobhunters and BBC3’s Cash Zone. She has also written careers content for The Guardian, The Undercover Recruiter, Jobsite and Totaljobs.com, amongst others.
Aimee added about the award: “Being announced as Canmol’s New Marketer of 2013 was a huge honour. It’s fantastic to be recognised for my efforts in making a name for myself and for my business, and I hope to build on my success in the future.”
Richard Houdmont, Director for Wales of The Chartered Institute of Marketing, added: “Aimee’s entrepreneurial spirit combined with her expertise and passion for the sector has led to her success. Her ability to carve such a high profile for herself in a short space of time has helped her business to stand out and she is a great example of a new and innovative marketer.”
