THE owner of Jenner Park’s Barry Town Social Club has closed the clubhouse and ceased trading the business.
The company, Barry Town Association Football Club (AFC) Ltd, is still listed as active with Companies House, but owner Stuart Lovering said in a statement on Wednesday: “The club has closed and the business has ceased trading on 25/09/13 Barry Town AFC Ltd.”
A spokesperson from Companies House added that it was currently awaiting the accounts for the last year of trading, which are due at the end of September.
Mike Stringer, who had been the landlord of the clubhouse for the last 19 years, had a meeting with Mr Lovering on Wednesday when he was told that he was being made redundant.
“I’m gutted as after 19 years I have made some great friends there,” he said.
“He asked if I was interested in buying the club and I said I’m not in a position to do that, so he then informed me the club was therefore put into liquidation.
“The scrap merchants then came in and took all the fixtures and fittings they could.”
Last Monday, September 23, the Vale Council cabinet called for the ‘urgent’ installation of temporary changing rooms at Jenner Park following “an imminent threat to the provision of utility supplies serving the entire building”.
On Thursday, September 26, the Vale Council added that the leaseholder arrangements for the bar and clubhouse was an “ongoing legal matter” and that they could not comment any further.
Barry Town United’s under 19 team were due to play Taffs Well at Jenner Park on Sunday, September 29, but chose to reverse the fixture and play it away from home.
Director of visible services and housing at the Vale Council, Miles Punter, said: “Both Barry Town United and Rhoose FC have been offered alternative changing facilities in Barry to ensure that all their fixtures can go ahead at Jenner Park as planned prior to the installation of the temporary changing facilities at the stadium within the next few weeks.”
He added: “I am unable to answer any questions in respect to the lease arrangements for the bar and clubhouse at this time, as this is an ongoing legal matter.”
