BARRY residents suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder have been encouraged to sign up to a research study that aims to treat the condition and reduce waiting lists.
Dr Catrin Lewis, a research psychologist at Cardiff University, is carrying out the research as part of her PhD studies. She said that the aim of the study, which began in March this year, was to reduce the waiting lists for treatment as they can often be more than a year.
“Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect up to 30 per cent of people who go through a traumatic event, such as an accident or an assault,” she said.
“Symptoms include upsetting thoughts about the trauma, nightmares, difficulties sleeping, and feeling unable to relax. Although the disorder is treatable with psychological therapy, sufferers in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan are faced with very long waiting lists to access specialist help, often over a year.”
The study combines face-to-face therapy with an online programme to make it more accessible to those taking part. Examples of PTSD cases that have used the trial so far include traumatic child birth, car crashes and accidents at work.
“Research being conducted at Cardiff University gives new hope to PTSD sufferers,” added Dr Lewis. “Researchers led by Professor Jonathan Bisson, have developed a new treatment, which is delivered online with regular guidance from a trauma therapist. The eight week treatment is initiated with an hour-long face-to-face appointment, followed by four 30-minute sessions.
“In between appointments, an online programme based on Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is used at home. It is hoped that the new treatment (Spring: a step by step treatment for PTSD) will help increase student access to appropriate therapy.”
The study is currently recruiting participants from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to take part.
