Vale MP Alun Cairns appointed Honorary President of Barry Town United

VALE MP Alun Cairns has said he feels “truly privileged” to be appointed an Honorary President of Barry Town United.
The local MP recently welcomed the news that the Football Association of Wales (FAW) voted to admit Barry Town United into the Welsh League’s Third Division earlier this month.
The move followed the High Court ruling that the FAW had acted unlawfully in not allowing the club in the league. The court battle was after the previous owner withdrew the club from the league.
The Vale MP has worked closely with the supporters committee for over a year, and has paid tribute to the efforts and commitment of all the supporters and players in securing a future for the club.
“I feel truly privileged to accept the role of Honorary President of Barry Town United,” he said.
“The last few seasons have been tough for supporters and players alike but now the future is looking as exciting as it has ever been. Barry Town owned and run by its supporters – in the Welsh League.
“There is no doubt that we wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the Supporters’ Committee and their determination to fight, against the odds in the interests of football in Barry. They have organised and run the club over recent years; they won the call to have an EGM of the Welsh FA Council; they researched the legal position; and mounted a successful legal challenge against the sport’s governing body.
“A new season and a big campaign is in front of us. This time, however, the campaign is for promotion - I look forward to being a regular attendee to Jenner Park.”
Gavin Chesterfield, Manager of Barry Town United AFC, said:
"As a club we are delighted Alun has accepted our invitation to become one of our Honorary Club Presidents. Alun has been a strength to us and huge source of guidance since our initial discussions back in October.
“Regardless of whether it be morning, noon or night Alun has been there for the club and myself personally. We are all hugely looking forward to building the club with Alun at our side."
