A PRISON officer discovered it pays to advertise in the Barry & District News when his unexpected, expected proposal achieved an overwhelming response.
41-year-old Terry Pagram’s special classified page notice – Louisa Greenhill Will You Marry Me? – gained a “Yes” reply, after his 30-year-old school nurse girlfriend turned to the page.
The couple, both originally from Homcastle in Lincolnshire, had known each other for years, but three-and-a-half months ago arranged a date via social networking site Facebook.
Terry said: “Our paths have crossed many times over the years without us ever actually meeting or even being aware of each other, but we eventually met on a night out.
“Louisa is a good friend of a good friend of mine so we got talking, Louisa was busy telling me and my friend how she was happy to be single and had no interest in having a man at all.
“I asked her out the next day via Facebook - the modern day love letter.
“We hit it off straight away and have hardly spent a day or night apart since.
“We both have a similar sense of humour and outlook on life. Everything has just fallen into place for us.
He added: “When I showed Louisa the newspaper she started crying and saying, are you really doing this now - tears of joy of course - as she knew I was planning to propose, but was expecting me to do it in October when we go to Mexico,
“I am the best man at my friend’s wedding then.
“She had absolutely no idea that I was going to do it then. Her sister was in on it as we were staying at her house at RAF St Athan, Louisa was totally in shock.
We have celebrated by drinking champagne and spending a wonderful weekend in South Wales.
“I decided to do it via the newspaper as I thought it was a novel idea, especially as she wouldn't expect it in the Barry & District newspaper. I had been planning it for about a month, and I was terribly nervous.”
