BARRY’S RAFA branch is set to hold a number of events to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
Howard Provis, secretary of Barry RAFA, said: “For many members celebrating the 75th Anniversary began in July with a buffet reception at the Mayor’s Parlour, but the real busy period is just around the corner with the Branch involved in ‘Wings Week’.
“We invite you to meet us at the Barry Wartime Weekend community event on August 31 and September 1.
“Our stand will be located in the Barry Island Pleasure Park, next to the life-sized replica Spitfire.
“We will also be holding an ‘Open Day’ at King Square on Saturday, September 7, between 10.00am and 2.00pm.
“There will be something for all the family, including performances from volunteer groups and stalls.”
As part of the celebrations there will also be a historical display in Barry Library throughout ‘Wings Week’, September 7 -14, supported by the Barry at War Group.
On Sunday, September 8, a short Battle of Britain Remembrance Service will be held at the cenotaph, Gladstone Road, at 11.45am when wreaths may be laid.
Celebrations continue into October with a Charity Concert on October 11, at St Mary’s Church, Holton Road, at 7.30pm with performances from guest host Ben Smith from ‘Only Men Aloud’ and the Vale of Glamorgan Brass Band. Tickets are already available for this event.
On November 14 the Branch will be holding a dinner when international harpist Bethan Myfanwy Hughes will be performing. This is open to individuals or groups, and especially former RAF or RAFA branch members to join in the celebrations.
Also successfully launched this year is the Branch monthly Anniversary Lotto, a fund raising draw at only £1.00 a month.
