VALE Assembly Member, Andrew RT Davies, has attacked proposals from the Labour-run council to introduce parking charges in the Vale of Glamorgan.

He described the proposals as a “tax on the high street”

that would drive shoppers away, causing irreparable damage to town centres and local high streets.

Mr Davies said: “If you charge prohibitively you drive shoppers to out of town shopping centres and it is the businesses on the high street that suffer as a consequence.

“As for the argument coming from this Labour council that local businesses want to see charging introduced, if only to mitigate the impact of local workers taking up all of the parking spaces; that’s quite simply nonsense.

“If you want to make sure that there are enough parking spaces for shoppers then you just have to work more effectively with traffic wardens.”
