Barry scaffolding firm worker charged with mate's murder

A PENARTH scaffolder has appeared in court charged with the murder of a workmate.
Jermaine Maguire was refused bail yesterday morning (Wednesday, February 6) at Plymouth Crown Court for the alleged murder of 32-year-old Andrew Wingren, also from Penarth.
The body of former St Cyres student Mr Wingren was found outside a pub in a small village near Plymouth early Saturday morning .
The two men, who both worked for a Barry-based scaffolding firm were believed to have been working on a job in the area prior to the death.
Maguire was arrested by murder detectives from Devon & Cornwall Police on Saturday, shortly after they were called by paramedics trying to revive Mr Wingren in Malborough, South Devon.
Twenty-two-yearold Maguire is said to have wept in the dock during his first court appearance at Torquay Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Tom Gent, managing director of scaffolding company CASS Hire and Sales Ltd, where Mr Wingren worked, paid tribute to a “real character” earlier this week.
“I’ve known Andrew for a number of years through work but have known him for considerably longer as we attended St Cyres together, though he was in the year below me,” he said.
“We have had a long working relationship stemming from when we were both employed by another scaffolding company and he has been working for me here at CASS for around two years.
“He was a lovely, down-to-earth guy and a real character.
“As a scaffolder, he was incredibly talented and had worked on some of our biggest projects including the renovation of Penarth Pier.
“The tragic incident is a huge shame as he was a brilliant scaffolder and a great guy.
“It’s a big loss to us all.”
Mr Wingren previously worked for local firm SHS Scaffolding.
Family members posted heartfelt messages in his honour on social media sites. One said: “You may be gone but never forgotten because every person that knew you will remember you forever.
“You will always stay in my heart.”
South Devon Police said Mr Wingren’s body was found at 6.55am in the Higher Town area of Malborough on Saturday.
Maguire is due before Plymouth Crown Court again on Tuesday.
