THE RNLI's Barry Dock volunteer crew and management committee launched a local appeal in 2012, asking members of the public and a number of prominent industrial and commercial companies to help raise £10,000 towards a new lifeboat berthing pontoon.

In response to the appeal, a St Athan man and his son took on the Three Peaks Challenge to help raise funds. David Stephen and son Craig had to climb to the top of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon - the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales - in a 24 hour period.

Dave said: "I didn't realise how tough the challenge was going to be. "We started at the base of Ben Nevis at 7.30am, started the climb of Scafell Pike at 5.30pm and then started Snowdon at 3am - getting back at 7.10am, just within the 24 hours.

"We were tired and hungry, but elated at completing such a challenge!"

He said he decided to support the Lifeboat appeal because he has 'a lot of respect' for the volunteers who risk their lives to save people at sea.

Stuart McMillan, chairman of the Barry Dock Lifeboat Management Group, said: "Since launching the appeal in August, nearly £5,000 has been raised and we are eager to reach our target of £10,000 as soon as possible."

Donations to the appeal can be sent to Stuart McMillan, Chairman Barry Dock lifeboat, 42 Heath Avenue, Penarth, or contact Stuart on 029 2070 5234.

"Any support will be gratefully received," he added.
