Three call-outs for Barry Island Coastguards

BARRY coastguards have attended three incidents since Christmas Eve.

A report received on December 24 saw them attend Bull's Nose, Cold Knap, where it was discovered 80 to 100 tonnes of topsoil had fallen from the cliff - possibly resulting from recent wet weather. The earth has now washed out to sea.

The team was next called to assist in the Porthkerry area, at midnight on December 28, following a report of a missing man. He was found to have climbed over the fence at the Golden Steps and fallen down a steep bank. Coastguard, police, fire and ambulance attended, and he was taken to hospital. Emergency services were stood down at 2.30am.

On January 7, a member of the public reported seeing someone in trouble in the sea at Whitmore Bay.

It turned out to be a false alarm, as the object spotted was in fact a tree trunk.

* If you find yourself or see others in trouble in the water or along the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
