AS Christmas approaches, the Vale dog wardens are appealing to the public to remember the unwanted and stray dogs which are cared for by the Vale's contract kennels.

Vale dog warden Caroline Cowan said: "Christmas is a busy time for everyone but if residents could spare a thought for those dogs awaiting homes, Croft Rescue Kennels would be very grateful.

"Donations of tinned dog food, complete food, biscuits and treats would really make a difference. Also any clean bedding, blankets and towels would be gratefully received."

Croft operates a responsible rehoming policy in the weeks prior to Christmas to try to ensure that puppies are not given as Christmas presents.

There are currently many dogs in need of a home, including lurchers, huskies, Jack Russells, border terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers and many crossbreeds.

Kennel owner Adrienne Morgan said: "At this time of year, people are busy with their own festive preparations and don’t always seem keen to take on the added responsibility of a new dog.

"We accept this, but would like to appeal to your previously generous readers to try to make the dogs' Christmas as happy as possible. Any donation of tinned dog food and dog treats really would make a difference to these dogs.”

The Vale dog wardens may be able to collect bedding or treat donations and can be contacted on 01446 709105, Monday to Thursday between 8.30am and 5pm, or on Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm.
