A GROUP of London 2012 Olympic torchbearers dusted off their distinctive white tracksuits and held their torches aloft once more to switch on the Christmas lights in Barry town centre!

After playing their part in an amazing summer of sport and events, Lara Cowpe, Gary Mickelsen, Pauline Eastment, Karen O’Donoghue-Harris, James French, Julie Crayford and Nicholas Cushen all added some Olympic spirit to the start of Barry’s Christmas celebrations on King Square last Friday (November 30).

Organised by the Vale Council, the switch-on brought some colour and light to the town hall, trees around the square and the 40ft centre-piece Christmas tree.

The Vale Council’s events officer Sarah Jones said: “Thanks to everyone who braved the cold weather and came out to support the event. It was great to have some of the inspirational Olympic torchbearers involved, and thanks also to Bro Radio, who did an excellent job in hosting the evening’s entertainment.”

The music and entertainment included performances from Yuletide Rocks, brass band All That Jazz, a series of street entertainers, and Oyster Opera who belted out some stirring opera on the streets of Barry.

The Christmas lights switch-on in Barry town centre followed similar recent events in Barry’s High Street and St Athan, which were also supported by the Vale Council.

The next Christmas event in Barry town centre will be the visit of Santa Claus and his reindeer on Saturday, December 15, between 10am and 3pm.

Central Park will become a festive arena for the day, complete with snow, ice sculptures and live music, while the event will also feature The Christmas Storytelling Tent, a puppet show that is especially suitable for younger children. The event is free and to find out more call Sarah Jones on 01446 704737.
