A SUPERMARKET giant has made strides into the community, by employing 13 local people to serve its new customers.

The new Tesco Express store, set to open in the former Royal Hotel on Barry Road in Cadoxton on Monday, has hired the lucky number after receiving 85 applications for the sought-after jobs.

And Tesco says it interviewed and recruited staff from the local area 'to bring a community feel to the store'.

Store manager Carl Davies and his team promoted the new jobs in local stores and through the Job CentrePlus - and all vacancies have been filled by local people.

"I am really pleased with my new team and I'm looking forward to working with them," he said.

"We are delighted to be opening a Tesco Express store on Barry Road and look forward to playing an active role in the local community."

The store officially launches at 10.30am on Monday, November 19, when a representative from Ty Hafan will cut the ribbon. Staff will then present a cheque for £500 to the hospice.

The store will open daily from 6am to 11pm and feature a free cash machine and customer parking.
