New play project moving to two Vale area

TRADITIONAL ACTIVITIES: The Play Aloud team were recently running play sessions based at the St Bride's Major Riding and Trekking Centre, and will soon be moving into the Cadoxton and St Athan areas.
AN exciting project which encourages children to enjoy the fun of traditional play activities is moving into two new areas of the Vale.
For the next six months, youngsters in St Athan and Cadoxton will be able to take part in free 'Play Aloud' sessions each week, and volunteers from the local communities are being sought to keep the sessions going long after the project ends.
'Play Aloud' is a three-year Big Lottery funded project run in partnership by the Vale Council and Cardiff Council.
The Vale's Play Aloud team leader Nicole Webber said: "We want children to rediscover what it is like to play, for children to be able to play freely like they did years ago, getting dirty and exploring the most basic and natural materials.
"It's great for children to have the opportunities to play with their friends in environments that are overseen but not controlled by the play workers.
"We are now into the second year of Play Aloud in the Vale and have already been into a number of communities including Colcot in Barry, St Bride's Major and Llantwit Major. The response has been excellent so far with children and adult volunteers keen to get involved, and we are looking forward to going into St Athan and Cadoxton."
Nicole added: "Key to the project's success is that the local communities take ownership of the play sessions and after the six month period they are able to lead their own play provision or events for local children with the continued support of the Play Aloud team."
The new Play Aloud sessions will take place in St Athan Primary School every Tuesday between 3.15pm-4.30pm from November 6; and at Cadoxton Primary School every Wednesday between 3.30pm-5pm from November 7.
All children are welcome to attend these free sessions which will let children have a go at activities such as arts and crafts, den building, sports activities and sensory play.
The Play Aloud project is supported by Re-Create, The Parents Federation, Voluntary Action Cardiff and the Vale Centre for Voluntary Services.
