OCTOBER saw the launch of Barry Comprehensive School's first student-led gymnastics squad.
Head coach Liam Tanner and assistant coach Simon Sheppard will be leading training sessions every Tuesday after school for students to learn brand new moves and skills to add to their pre-existing experience or even learn from scratch! It's all completely free and is part of the 5x60 curriculum overseen by Stefan Williams, the school's 5x60 officer.
Liam explained why he started the class and what inspired him. "I have been very involved with gymnastics at the Barry YMCA, both learning and teaching. I thought it was about time I took my skills further and used them to help others learn this great and interesting sport. Two years ago I was part of a six man team from Barry Comprehensive, who went to the Welsh Floor and Vault Championship and won gold. We then went to the British Championships representing Wales in the floor and vault section. We won fourth position in the UK but, then, when we got back, we just stopped. I thought it was about time we started again but this time I didn't want to just compete: I wanted to coach the next generation of gold medallists."
Simon approached the sport from a different direction: "I have practised free-running for the last two years, competed in a few team competitions and now I want to put my skills to the test by teaching others new and exciting ways to overcome obstacles."
Headteacher Mr McNamara, who was present at the first training session, commented: "This student led initiative is an excellent opportunity for learners to have access to specialist coaches in this exciting and challenging sport."
