LIVE jazz is set to rock the Island when a group of musos bring a taste of George Gershwin to Barry next Thursday. (Nov 1)
Coffee Cove and Wine Bar, Esplanade Buildings, Friars Road, Barry Island, will hit the right note with music lovers when marketing academics and local musicians reprise a performance staged at this year's Academy of Marketing conference.
The performance uses a mix of video montage, performance and song to comment on the composer's impact on business, marketing and culture, including an exploration of Gershwin's music that has been used in advertising campaigns.
It also considers Ira Gershwin the lyricist, copywriter extraordinaire - who exploited brands, places, celebrities and technology and providing a template for future generations of songwriters and advertising executives.
The session is coordinated by Robin Croft (a reader in marketing at the University of Bedfordshire, alto saxophone).
Other performers included Douglas Brownlie (Professor of Marketing, University of Stirling, baritone saxophone), Steve Oakes (Senior Lecturer in Marketing, University of Liverpool, guitar) and Heather Skinner (Reader in Marketing, University of Glamorgan, vocals).
Performers will also be joined by Jared and Mark from local band Ladies Love A Superhero who will be performing acoustic versions of some Gershwin classics.
George Gershwin (1898-1937) was the first successful composer of the marketing age.
In his short life he was able to ride successive waves of technology, growing up writing sheet music for Broadway, but also producing early recordings on the automatic piano.
His work went onto wax and then Bakelite as the phonograph developed into the gramophone, hosted one of the world's first syndicated radio stations, was the first musician to hire football stadia for his performances and was writing some of his greatest work for the new movie industry at the end of his life.
The performance takes place from 5pm until 6pm on Thursday, November 1.
