Previous Occupation - Previously Coordinator of Welsh Women's Aid (1980s), and Director of Tenant Participation Advisory Service, former Director of Chwarae Teg, Director of Fair Play (1992-99). Former Non-Executive Director of Cardiff Community Health Trust. UNISON member.
Personal Overview - Narrowly held a key marginal seat in Wales for Labour, and has been rewarded by becoming the Secretary for Health & Social Services. This lines up with her career, where she has worked for several voluntary organisations and is a former Vice Chairman of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action. Retained her position of Health Minister after the 2003 elections, despite public criticism of her handling of hospital waiting list issues. This was however only a short term respite, she was reshuffled in early 2005 after a perceived lack of progress, moving to cover Education in the Labour/Plaid Cymru coalition after the 2007 elections. Was shifted sideways in the December 2009 reshuffle promoted by the election of Carwyn Jones to the post of First Minister.
