TV presenter Melanie Sykes has revealed she is getting herself checked for breast cancer after her mother survived the disease.

She has also urged women to focus on their health and fitness to reduce their risk of developing the disease.

Sykes, 47, wrote on Instagram: “I’m off to have a mammogram and ultrasound today.

“My mother survived breast cancer so it’s important that I get regular checks.

I’m off to have a mammogram and ultrasound today. My mother survived breast cancer so it’s important that I get regular checks. It’s a crazy fact that in the UK 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer at some point in their lives. But being active and getting your heart rate up for 20 mins a day you are helping to prevent your risk of developing the disease. I am in my 10th year of keeping fit now and I have always said it was and is an investment in my health and future. So to get you all revved up @BreastCancerUK virtual #50kmyway is a great way to build up a fitness habit. You can break it up with as many runs, jogs and walks as you need over the month of June. Tell your mum’s, sisters and girlfriends, better still sign up with them today and together get moving. Come on Ladies get on it 💪🏼#photograph by @samhemsley ❤️ https://www.breastcanceruk.org.uk/50kmyway

Sykes, who recently appeared on Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off For Stand Up To Cancer, said she is now in her “10th year of keeping fit”, and described it as being “an investment in my health and future”.

She said she wanted to get her followers “all revved up” to take part in Breast Cancer UK’s new virtual event 50K My Way, which encourages people to complete 50k by either running or walking any time in June to “build up a fitness habit”.

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! and Big Breakfast star added: “You can break it up with as many runs, jogs and walks as you need over the month of June.

“Tell your mums, sisters and girlfriends, better still sign up with them today and together get moving. Come on Ladies get on it.”

Along with her post, Sykes shared a picture of herself seemingly naked and with her arms crossed over her chest, which she said was taken by photographer Samantha Hemsley.
