AS Record Store Day arrives this Saturday, fans of Newport’s leading punk outfit, Bad Sam, will be set to add copies of the bands sophomore album, Bring Me The Head of.. to their vinyl collections.

The album was released as 500 limited edition Green Vinyl’s on the Kriminal Records label on Good Friday, 100 copies of which were snapped up by eager fans in the first few hours.

“One guy was sending some off to Australia and I’ve got a box going to Holland,” Bad Sam front man and proprietor of Kriminal Records, Dean Beddis tells Andy Howells, “There’s one going to a music magazine in Czechoslovakia. There’s just 500 on green vinyl, but it will be on CD in about two weeks.”

A life-long music fan, Dean is no stranger to the Newport music scene, having fronted several punk bands as well as keeping local music fans happy with endless supplies of music on a variety of formats from his Kriminal Records shop in Newport Indoor Market.

"Since I was little, I was listening to Elvis and watching Spaghetti Westerns with my dad,” says Dean who cites Rock n Roll and Doo Wop genres amongst his earliest influences. “He was playing records all the time but in the 70s everyone was listening to music. I got into punk when I was 14 and I’m 52 now so Punk’s been a big part of my life.”

It would be members of Dean’s former band The Cowboy Killers and Dub War that would eventually come together to form Bad Sam almost ten years ago. The band’s first LP, Working Class Holocaust would follow in 2013 and sold out almost immediately. The bands second album, Bring Me the Head Of… looks set to do the same.

“It’s all very political and left-wing,” explains Dean who believes there is still room in music to make listeners aware of political issues, “Some rappers in the Bronx might be singing about cops harassing them or racism, whereas ours is about local issues, the homelessness and we’ll say something about Afghanistan, Syria and things like that. Its social comment to make people think and ask a question about something.”

Fans can purchase Bring Me the Head Of… by Bad Sam direct from Kriminal Records in Newport Indoor Market for £10, alternatively visit Bad Sam or Kriminal Record’s Facebook pages to contact Dean directly to purchase a copy.

Bad Sam will also be performing at Le Pub on June 9 along with Pizza Tramp and Grand Collapse. For further details visit www.lepub.co.uk
