More than one way to crack a nut

THE smash hit that is Matthew Bourne's version of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker comes to Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre this month.

Nutcracker! follows Clara's bittersweet journey from a hilariously bleak Christmas Eve at Dr Dross' orphanage for waifs and strays, through a shimmering, ice-skating, winter wonderland to the scrumptious candy kingdom of Sweetieland.

Tchaikovsky's glorious score and Olivier award winning designer Anthony Ward's sets and costumes combine with sizzling choreography to create a fresh, hip and charmingly irreverent interpretation of the traditional Christmas favourite that will delight the whole family.

In a New Yorker Magazine profile, celebrated dance writer, Joan Acocella, described Bourne as "probably the world's most successful choreographer".

His work as a choreographer / director has seen him involved in a series of hugely successful productions: Oliver, My Fair Lady and most recently Mary Poppins for Cameron Mackintosh and Disney.

Nutcracker is at the Wales Millennium Centre between April 15 and 19.

Tickets are available from the box office on 08700 40 2000 or at www.wmc.org.uk
