A PRODUCTION to commemorate the battle of Mametz Wood will be performed at the National Museum Cardiff to remember the centenary of the battle.

In 1916, the battle of the Somme is raging. Tasked with taking Mametz Wood, the Welsh 38th have dwindling supplies, heavy casualties and plummeting moral.

When poor orders lead to disastrous results, the soldiers were accused of cowardice. In the deathly silence, who will speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves?

Mametz Wood follows the stories of a small group of soldiers at the battle, including a pair of brothers killed at the battle and an underage recruit.

Writer Lyon Devereux was partly inspired by the story of his great grandfather, Peter, who fought at the Somme as an underage boy soldier.

Stranded in No Man's Land and shell shocked Peter was helped by a French soldier called Leon. After the war Peter named his son Leon in memory of that French soldier, This Leon was killed in the Second World War so Lyon was named in memory of both Leons' and the spelling reflects the French connection.

The free performances will take place on July 9 at 3pm and 6pm and on July 10 at 1pm and 3pm.
