AUDIENCES will soon be able to Meet Fred at The Other Room at Porters as part of the Hijinx Unity Festival.

A puppet fights prejudice every day. Fred just wants to be part of the real world, get a job and meet a girl, but when threatened with losing his PLA (Puppetry Living Allowance), Fred’s life begins to spiral out of his control.

With wit and dark humour, Meet Fred exposes the ridiculous situations some of the most vulnerable in our society encounter when their support is taken from them, exploding the myth that “we are all in this together”.

Fred’s return to The Other Room, where he started out as one of the Your Room scratch performances last October, will be a limited run of previews before the show heads to the Edinburgh Festival, with performances at Summerhall throughout August.

Meet Fred’s cast includes professional actors with learning disabilities who train at Hijinx’s Cardiff-based Academy, an ongoing performance course for learning disabled performers.

Hijinx are one of the UK’s leading inclusive theatre companies. Expect something edgy, surprising, sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes hilarious, sometimes beautiful or ugly, sexy or plain offensive, but always with a cast that includes artists with a learning disability.

Blind Summit are one of the UK’s leading contemporary puppetry companies. Their shows, The Table and Citizen Puppet, have enjoyed huge success in recent years, both at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and on extensive national and international tours.

Meet Fred is suitable for all audiences over the age of 14.

Meet Fred will be performed at The Other Room from June 23 to July 2.
