Barry's hopes of a good gate for their home fragment of the season were spoilt by Tuesday's heavy rain, but a crowd of just over 400 saw a fluctuating match.

Most school or college girls, having been taught hockey, and maybe played competitive hockey as students, have had to "hang up" their sticks on leaving. The exceptionally keen players have had to look elsewhere in order to continue in the sport, many joining the well established hockey club at Penarth.

Heavy rain on Saturday morning meant that a fresh wicket had to be cut on the Barry Island ground and this presented something of a problem for the Barry captain when he won the toss against Whitchurch Heath.

With four new professionals and toe amateurs in the team, Barry Town made their best start for years in their Southern League programme, winning in convincing fashion by a margin of 3-1 at Sittingbourne on Saturday.

On Wednesday week there was just that much more of a sparkle in the eyes of 50 air hostesses of Cambrian Airways. The reason - the girls have a new uniform. But this is a change with a big difference. It is believed to be the first time that air hostesses have a uniform designed to their own recommendations.
