THE Vale of Glamorgan Festival of Music will take place until May 23 with a packed line-up of shows in Penarth and Cardiff.

On Friday, May 22 at 1pm the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra will perform at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre.

Along with choral music, Estonia’s composers have produced a sumptuous harvest of music for strings, fed and nurtured by the richness and depth of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. Experience three generations of composers in this lunchtime concert: the crisp neo-classicism of Jaan Rääts, the contemplative music of his contemporary Arvo Pärt, the drama of Erkki-Sven Tüür and the lyrical romanticism of Tõnu Kõrvits.

Later the same day at 7.30pm, soloists from China’s National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra will perform at the Norwegian Church, Cardiff Bay.

Two of Arvo Pärt’s most-admired works, Fratres and Summa, share a concert with the shimmering lyricism of Dobrinka Tabakova’s Organum Light and Such Different Paths – a personal journey of great intensity. There’s another opportunity to hear the work of the younger generation of Chinese composers with music by the award-winning Xiao Ying.

Then finally on Saturday, May 23, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir will perform at St David’s Hall at 7.30pm.

Simple but not simplistic, Arvo Pärt’s transcendent music is entirely of our time yet reaches back into the past, almost to plainsong itself. There could be no better partnership than the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra to perform his work alongside the “glowing tonal harmonies” of Dobrinka Tabakova whose “grand, sweeping gestures convey a huge emotional depth” (The Strad).
