ON Friday, March 28, my partner and I went to the Tithe Barn at St Donats the home of the St Donats Arts Centre.

We went to see Only Fools and Boycie, an intimate evening with the actor John Challis.

He spoke about his life from childhood to the present telling us about television programmes he had been in from Z Cars, Open all Hours and Coronation Street to Dr Who, and that he had toured with The Beatles providing one-liners. His talk was full of comical anecdotes accompanied by a film showing him in the aforementioned programmes.

When originally shown on television the pilot for Only Fools and Horses did not get many viewers and it was decided to shelve it. It was rolled out again some time later and got double the number of viewers so the actors were recalled and a series was made.

A spin-off from Only Fools and Horses, The Green Green Grass, built around the character Boycie was made. It was filmed at John's own home.

After his talk he left the stage and walked through the audience into the bar where he was happy to autograph copies of his books.

We then made our way home after a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
