VALE libraries are looking for old photographs to add to an online collection depicting the history of Barry and the surrounding areas.

In collaboration with People's Collection Wales, all libraries in the Vale of Glamorgan are bringing out their stored collections of photographs from the last two centuries and putting them online for all to see.

If you have any old photographs of the area or family snaps of events, please bring them to Barry Library on Digital Heritage Day on Monday, October 21, between 10am and 4pm.

Photographs will be scanned and returned to the owner on the same day.

The copies will be added to the Vale Libraries site and to the People's Collection Wales site, giving everyone the chance to learn about the history of our area.

Community librarian Melanie Weeks said: "Photographs are our most powerful tool in making local history come alive. We're asking people to raid their albums, drawers and attics for any photographs that could contribute to our online collection.

"With the centenary of the First World War next year, it would be particularly useful to establish a collection of photographs from that period.

"Although we are mainly asking people to bring in photographs to be scanned, we would also be interested in taking pictures of any memorabilia or artefacts, such as ration books, medals or letters, that help to tell the story of the Vale of Glamorgan."
