Welcome win for Barry RFC

BARRY RFC returned to league action last Saturday for the closing stages of the 2007-08 campaign with a home fixture against Cefn Coed.
Their previous meeting in November saw Barry succumb to a 26-11 defeat and with the visitors now lying in mid table and Barry at the bottom of the division, a determined and disciplined approach by the Barry players was required if any league points were to be gained.
It transpired that they produced their best performance for some time.
On a bright, cold, windy afternoon, Barry kicked off with the wind in their favour and soon had Cefn Coed on the back foot, and within 10 minutes had scored 6 points from a drop goal and a penalty goal by outside-half Chris Cummings.
With the visitors showing more commitment, some strong running by the Cefn midfield tested Barry's defence, but a break by the Barry centres gave right winger Jamie Jones a chance to show his speed and strength as he raced over for an excellent try.
Cummings converted and the first period ended with another penalty goal by Cummings to give Barry a 16-0 lead at half time.
The second half saw Barry continuing to attack and a determined run by full back Josh Davies enabled him to score a try that was converted by Cummings.
Cefn Coed hit back with a try and conversion before scrum half John Dimond finished off a fine move which had been initiated by No 8 Jason Evans and carried on by winger Jamie Jones. Cummings again converted with an excellent kick into the wind.
Flanker James Hadfield completed the scoring with Barry's fourth try which Cummings converted to give his side a well deserved victory at 37-7.
This was the result Barry needed following the two recent near misses against Ferndale and Llantwit Major, and hopefully the team will now play with more confidence to gain a few more scalps before the season is over.
This Saturday Barry travel to play Pentyrch, kick-off 2.30pm.
