Barry suffer narrow away defeat
LLANDAFF NORTH 17
BARRY 13
BARRY 1st XV squad made the short journey to Llandaff last Saturday to meet fellow East District club, Llandaff North after a gap of six years.
The hosts had started their season on a high note with a narrow victory over Cardiff High School Old Boys whilst Barry's players were anxious to improve upon the previous weekend's performance with an away victory.
From the kick-off Barry dominated play and only a stout defence by the North prevented any early tries, and it was left to the boot of inside centre Dafydd Evans, who took advantage of quick recycled ball, to drop a goal giving his side a well-deserved 3 point lead.
As the half progressed the home side came more into the game and with Barry going off the boil it was their line that was now being threatened until an injury to flanker Owain Brown resulted in changes to the Barry team.
Full back James Hadfield moved to flanker, his favoured position, with Tom Lee going from scrum half to replace Hadfield at 15 while John Dimond left the bench to take the number 9 shirt. Dimond, within two minutes of coming on to the pitch, and after two storming runs, crossed for an excellent try. Lee converted for a well-deserved 10-0 interval lead.
The start of the second half saw the North take advantage of another Barry transgression with their outside half kicking the resulting penalty goal.
From the restart they gathered the ball and with some slick passing caught the Barry defence off-guard to cross for a converted try to bring the scores level at 10 points apiece.
Barry, however, were still in the game and a period of pressure in the home side's half resulted in a penalty award which Lee converted for three points and a 13-10 point lead.
With less than ten minutes remaining, and after a breakdown in a Barry attack, the North's scrum half took full advantage a of quickly taken tapped penalty to race 60 yards for a converted try and victory for his side.
This was generally a lack-lustre performance, especially during the second half, by a Barry team that for the second week failed to gain victory over a side that they were capable of beating.
The only saving grace is that Barry gained a losing bonus point by being within 7 points of the winning team.
With no game this Saturday due to the Rugby World Cup match being played at the Millennium Stadium, Barry's coaches, Andrew Prosser and Darren Gibbon, have two weeks in which to prepare the squad for the match against Cilfynydd on Saturday, September 22, ko 2.30pm.
