Under-12s return to fray with a fine rugby display

FOLLOWING a fortnight of rain, Barry Under 12s finally got their season going again with a fine display of running rugby when they took on Llandaff North.

Tom Perry opened the scoring after only 15 seconds of play when he caught the ball from the kick off and ran in under the posts dodging many would be tacklers on the way.

The visitors made the same mistake and restarted with a kick that was run straight back at them, and after a few phases of play the ball again ended with Tom Perry who touched down for the Lions second try.

Not learning from their previous mistake their number 10 restarted with an accurate kick right on top of Tom Perry, and again the inevitable happened as another solo effort ended with the home team being 21 points up.

The opposition could not get a grip on the game and were being blitzed. It did not help when following a rugged forward drive Tiernan Scott ran in a try after a fine handling display by the backs.

The finest handling move of the first half saw quick second phase ball being spun through all hands to Rhidian Mepham playing out on the wing, the pass was put in front of him and he took the opportunity and raced in for the Lions fifth try.

The visitors should have crumbled by now but they rallied and put on a fine show, but sadly for them it was all defence, as they tackled well and stopped many home side attacks.

For Barry Sam Macliston was a giant in the line out and palmed back neat ball to scrum half Jack Fitchett, while Luke Giddings, Charlotte Waller and Sion Vidal worked well in the loose.

Also playing in the pack Brett Bowen-Humphries and Morgan Fogg secured many a ruck and maul. Finally the pressure proved too much for Llandaff and they conceded another try through Einan Scott, to make the half time score 38-0.

Llandaff made some changes in the second half and their style of play changed. Barry could not get any continuity and their try spree dried up; they now had to do some heavy defending of their own.

Dean Saif and Morgan Howells-Davies were always in the thick of things, tackling hard and determined to keep the Barry slate clean.

Barry made some counter attacks but they did not look as sharp as they were in the first half.

However linking with his backs Ashley Bevan gave a neat pass to full back Luke Evans who made a fine run for the line but was unluckily stopped short.

Further attacks failed with unforced errors giving the visitors a lifeline, but the deadlock was finally broken when Einan Scott crossed for his second and the inimitable Tom Perry was put in the clear with a fine pass and crossed for his fourth try.

The plucky visitors must be applauded for never giving in and playing to the final whistle.

Next match is on Sunday at home to Fairwater.
