SUNDAY'S clear skies, flat seas and a good forecast came as a welcome surprise for Sea View Lads but did not bode well for a day's fishing in the club's most recent competition.
Bright winter sunlight can often make the fish shy and more wary than usual but thankfully, on the day, the fishing was every bit as good as the weather.
Several anglers travelled to the western edge of the Vale to fish marks around Ogmore in pursuit of rays and dogs, while others chose to stay closer to home with conger as their main quarry.
In the event, all were rewarded. The top six anglers between them weighed in almost 80lb of fish, 50lb being weighed in by the top three alone.
Honours on the day were taken by Kevin Gardner with a magnificent small eyed ray of over 11lb contributing to a total weight of almost 19lb.
Mike Kerslake was runner up with a mix of eels and dogs for 16lb and John Cushen a close third with two ounces less, including an eel of almost 15lb.
Aida Harris had a specimen small eyed ray of 4lb plus a specimen dogfish of 2lb 10oz that won the nominated fish of the day pool.
Stringfellow thanked both his guide and ghillie on the day, Ice-cream and Chan for their kind assistance.
Others enjoyed a good day with lots of fish being weighed in and several anglers reporting losing large fish.
Lee and Rodger both lost a big eel at the waters edge (or was Rodger's a rockling of record proportions?).
