A chance to meet sea rescue heroes

BARRY Dock Lifeboat Station will be opening its doors this Saturday with an open day.

The station will be open to all members of the public, regardless of age, between 10am and 4pm, on May 6.

The day will involve a range of activities, including storytelling and presentations, for people to find out what life is like in one of the country s busiest rescue centres and what Barry s lifeboat heroes get up to.

Swimming star David Davies will be there on the day.

Visitors will be invited to have a go on the action stations during the day, testing guests stamina, observation skills, technical knowledge, teamwork, communication and navigation skills - all used constantly by the station s crew.

Abigail Phillips, the station s visitors officer, hopes that by opening the station to the public, people will become more aware of what an important role the lifeboat service plays.

She said: I hope people will come an visit us and find out about the brilliant things that have been going on for 100 years.

We don t get many visitors down here. I don t think many people actually know we re here.

I want people to get a proper feel for what goes on here. And what goes on is really exciting.

Visitors admission to the station is free.

l Individuals are needed to help out at the lifeboat station for just one day a month.

A nautical background, or knowledge of lifeboats, is not required as training will be given.

If you are an enthusiastic person and would like to help, contact Abigail from 6pm to 8pm on 07973 293587, or phone the lifeboat station on 01446 735678.
