Award for bravery

A BARRY police officer has been commended for bravery after he arrested an armed robber running from the scene of a crime.

PC Richard Wiseman was awarded the Chief Constable"s Certificate of Commendation at an awards ceremony last week.

During May last year, PC Wiseman was on patrol when he received a description of a man who had just committed a robbery at a Waterfront store carrying a handgun - and who had tried, unsuccessfully, to carjack a female driver.

The man fled to Barry train station to board a train and PC Wiseman challenged him on the platform and told him to put down his gun.

The man did as he was told but ran off and after a short chase, the police officer and handcuffed the man.

Armed officers then quickly arrived to the scene and completed the arrest.

The handgun was later found to be an air pistol resembling a real gun. The arrested man later appeared before Cardiff Crown Court, where he was sentenced to 10 years.

The police"s citation for PC Wiseman, read out at the awards ceremony, said: "In confronting this individual, Constable Wiseman showed tremendous courage and determination and disregard for his personal safety."
