BARRY FC 1
ELEC-TEC 4
BARRY FC s Jekyll and Hyde season continued last Saturday at Jenner Park as they turned in a woeful performance against an ever-improving Elec-Tec side.
The visitors were playing their fourth game of the week, but instead of being tired by their efforts were enthused after a seven day spell that included two victories and a cup semi-final that went to extra-time.
In contrast, Barry, without a game for a week, looked lethargic and uncompetitive, rather than relaxed and motivated to see the season out on a high.
In this final Vale Premier League match of the season at Jenner Park, it was an even first quarter of an hour, but two goals in three minutes left Barry reeling.
After 16 minutes, Elec-Tec s Richard O Connell saw Barry goalkeeper, Damien Lack off his line and lobbed him from the touchline to give his side the lead, the ball going over Lack s head and in at the far post.
Whether or not Lack could be faulted for his positioning for the opener, it was certainly the goalkeeper s fault that he didn t manage to clear his lines two minutes later. Failing to clear a long ball, Elec Tec s Danny Crawley made the most of the error to score with a simple tap-in.
Despite being two goals down, Barry were still very much in the match and halved the deficit before the break.
Barry s Ben Taylor was pushed in the back as he jumped for a ball in the penalty area, leaving Mattie Davie to slot home the penalty past Elec-Tec keeper Rob Jones.
The destination of the points was still very much in Barry s hands at this point, and the Linnets had a series of good opportunities early in the second half, the best falling to Adam Harvey who saw his shot go narrowly wide.
Then, suddenly, the Linnets found the game veering away from them.
First of all, a penalty was awarded against Barry around the hour mark, but Damien Lack did well to dive and save the spot-kick from Steve Norman.
That could have inspired Barry to greater things, but only minutes later, Danny Crawley was the first to reach a free-kick from the Elec-Tec left, scoring his second of the game.
Barry then self-destructed, Mattie Davie earning a red card and Nathan Shaw following him to the dressing room after Elec-Tec scored their fourth goal while most of the on-field attention was elsewhere in an off-the-ball incident.
Playing to the whistle, Elec Tec s Ryan Butler used the space to skip round Lack and make it 4-1.
A further injury to Rhys Newland left Barry with just eight men on the pitch and to their credit, they continued to try and play good football, ironically having their best period of the game but to no effect on the score-line.
It was a deeply disappointing performance from Barry FC, who are now assured of a mid-table final finish, reflecting their very l This week s Linnets Lotto numbers were 1, 9, 10, 11, 14 and 16. There were no winners, making next week s jackpot of 750 to be drawn from numbers 1-15. As always, the draw will be made at 7:30pm in the Castle Hotel on Monday.
l Congratulations to Barry FC players Haydn Stait and Kevin Owens who ran the London Marathon in 4hrs 17mins and 5 hrs 43 mins respectively to raise money for the Jamie Adamson Memorial.
