Rick takes to rooftop for justice

A BARRY man has defied the elements this week with a rooftop protest.

As we went to press, Rick Canty, 57, of Raldan Close, was set to spend his eighth night on the roof.

The protest started last Wednesday when bailiffs and police tried to evict Mr Canty from his home of more than a decade - and he says that he is not coming down.

Mr Canty, who has a safety harness attached to him, said his protest is the last resort in a long-running land boundary dispute.

Mr Canty claims that he is owed thousands of pounds in legal fees and that he has been to court numerous times but with no outcome.

I just want a bit of justice, he added.

Neighbours have turned out in force to support Mr Canty s protest, sitting outside with him and passing him food and water via a bucket and rope.

He has a tarpaulin and a sleeping bag to keep him warm and dry.

He said: All the neighbours have been wonderful, I get coffee at 3am.

His sister Penny Richards said: I think he is fantastic, of course.

He s brilliant, I don t know any other man who would do this.

Labour s Court ward councillor, Richard Bertin, said: I can understand and sympathise with him over this matter, he has the full support of his neighbours and friends.

Ricky has now become a local hero in the area and his campaign is going from strength to strength.

Mr Canty is looking for legal representation in his fight and is appealing for any solicitor or barrister that can help him to get in touch.

A website has been set up so residents can leave messages of support at www.rickontheroof.co.uk
