BIGAMIST IS JAILED

A BARRY bigamist - who was found out after his father told his new bride about his secret wife - has been jailed.

Katrina Hurley, 36, was just settling down to married life when she discovered husband Stephen Chamberlain s past.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Chamberlain, aged 40, had told Katrina he had one previous marriage.

But Chamberlain s father let it slip that he had been married TWICE before.

And Katrina turned detective to discover that her husband was still married at the time of their wedding.

Prosecutor Richard Evans told the court: In September 1996, Chamberlain married a woman called Margot Matherson.

The relationship lasted only a few months but he never legally ended the marriage.

Chamberlain was arrested for theft in 2004, soon after marrying Katrina.

Mr Evans said: While Chamberlain was in prison, Katrina contacted his father by email to let him know how he was doing.

In the course of these emails, Chamberlain s father told Katrina he had been married twice - not once as she had thought.

Former chef Chamberlain admitted bigamy and was jailed for four months.

Judge Christopher Vosper told him: You undertook a sacred ceremony you knew you were not entitled to.

This caused distress to Katrina who now feels extremely vulnerable. She has turned into a virtual recluse.

The court heard that Chamberlain and Katrina have now split up.
