Prolific re-offender locked up

MAGISTRATES jailed a Barry man for 200 days for his "prolific re-offending to feed his drug habit".

Jonathan Beasley, aged 34, of Glamorgan Street, Barry, appeared at Barry Magi-strates' Court on March 6 for sentencing.

He had previously admitted dishonestly receiving stolen goods, namely a CD radio, on December 19 and going equipped for a burglary on December 20. For these offences he received two concurrent 120-day terms.

He also admitted interfering with a vehicle with intent to steal on December 20, though no separate penalty was imposed for this.

He received concurrent 120-day terms for possessing heroin and amphetamine on January 14, and possessing amphetamine on January 28, all of which he admitted.

Magistrates also jailed him for a consecutive 80-day term after he admitted breaching a community rehabilitation order made on February 16 last year, by failing to keep appointments at the court.

The order was revoked, and Beasley was sentenced for the original offences of possessing cannabis, dishonestly receiving stolen goods, possessing heroin, having a locking knife without good reason in public, and a bail offence.

Sentencing him, magistrates said custody was appropriate because'the defendant has failed to respond to non-custodial sentences, and because of his prolific re-offending to feed his drug habit, which he does not see as a problem.
