Dropping in on our heroes

AN activity centre boasting the achievements of some of Barry's unsung heroes is opening up to the public in May.

The Barry Dock Lifeboat Station will soon welcome people of all ages to take part in activities, listen to stories and presentations, and find out what life is really like in one of the busiest rescue centres in the country.

Abigail Phillips recently accepted the voluntary role of lifeboat visitors' officer in a bid to heighten the awareness of the station and the work of the crews.

The mum-of-three, married to crew member Dave Phillips, hopes that by opening the station to the public, people will become more aware of what an important role the lifeboat service plays.

She said: "I hope people will come an visit us and find out about the brilliant things that have been going on for 100 years.

"We don't get many visitors down here. I don't think many people actually know we're here.

"I want people to get a proper feel for what goes on here. And what goes on is really exciting."

Visitors will be invited to have a go on the "action stations" at the open days. These will test guests' stamina, observation skills, technical knowledge, teamwork, communication skills and navigation skills - skills used constantly by the station's crew.

The action stations will also be used in talks that Abigail will be giving to schools and other groups.

Abigail is calling on local businesses to sponsor the action stations. In return they will receive free advertising. Cadoxton-based LDS Motor Factors have already lent their support.

Individuals are also needed to help out at the lifeboat station for just one day a month. A nautical background, or knowledge of lifeboats, is not required as training will be given.

If you are an enthusiastic person and would like to help, contact Abigail from 6pm to 8pm on 07973 293587, or phone the lifeboat station on 01446 735678.
