Town gets behind Dai Splash

BARRY'S Olympic medallist David Davies is going for gold at the Commonwealth Games in Australia!

The Welsh swimmer competes for the Common-wealth gold medal in the men's 1,500m freestyle final on Tuesday, March 21.

He may also double-up by contesting the 400m freestyle gold today (March 16).

David has the full backing not only of Barry folk, but also his official sponsor, the Principality Building Society.

The building society is giving its staff the chance to really get behind David in the final, by providing a big screen at the Barry Principality branch from 8am on Tuesday, March 21.

The Barry boy, popularly christened'Dai Splash', trains for five hours each day - alternating his time between the Welsh National Pool in Swansea and the Welsh Institute of Sport which is in Cardiff.

He swims on average 80,000m per week - the equivalent of swimming from his home in Barry to the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

David started swimming when he was just five years old, when his mother sent him to local swimming lessons in Barry, and he then went on to start competing at seven.
