Tag rugby scheme for kids encourages fun with sport

TAG rugby tournaments are being held for a range of Vale of Glamorgan primary schools with the aim of involving more youngsters in the sport.

Organised by Vale rugby development officer Matt Silva and "Future Blues" (Cardiff) development officer John Huw Williams, the series of tournaments are aimed at all age groups at Key Stage 2 level and will culminate in a local tag rugby festival.

The aim is to develop and encourage nine and 10 year- old players who may one day become part of a prestigious Cardiff Blues team.

The scheme will continue over the next two terms, with local community rugby officers involved in tournaments at primary schools at Pendoylan (March 10), Peterson-super-Ely (March 31), St Bride's (May 19) and Wick (June 16).

Ysgol Bro Morgannwg (Barry) and St Nicholas schools both hosted round robin tag tournaments and participating at the former venue were Welsh medium schools Ysgol Pen-y-Garth, Gwaun y Nant and Iolo Morganwg.

Matt and John extend their thanks to those who helped ensure the great success of the events.

Tag rugby encourages continuity in a non-contact environment, while still allowing players to develop a range of skills.

Shane Dyer is a parent and avid supporter of his rugby playing sons, one of whom attends Ysgol Pen-y-Garth and also plays at Dinas Powys. Shane feels tag rugby helps develop footwork and create gaps on the field.

John Huw Williams commented: "It's absolutely fantastic that schools have sent players to participate in the festival. Whilst there aren't overall prizes for winners, Black Horse have generously provided calculators for our most improved players."

Vale Dragon Sport officer Rachel McGuinness is involved in seven key sports as part of her agenda, and all schools taking part in the "Future Blues" tag rugby project have the opportunity to access specialist equipment through the scheme. Rachel said: "This initiative offers boys and girls familiarisation and progression in a fun environment."
